This lecture was given at the invitation of the Royal Town Planning Institute in Scotland as the Sir Patrick Geddes Commemorative Lecture for 2009, at the Royal Society of Edinburgh, on 20/05/2009. The lecture was sponsored by the Scottish Government, Historic Scotland, The Saltire Society, The Sir Patrick Geddes Memorial Trust and The Macaulay Land Use Research. It was introduced by Stewart Stevenson MSP, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change. It was made available on the RTPI website and it was requested for publication by Lindsay Paterson, Professor of Education at the University of Edinburgh, for publication in Scottish Affairs, published by the Institute of Governance at the University of Edinburgh.
