Digital Break Up, Separation, and Divorce

With technology becoming more pervasive in everyday life, it has become common for individuals to use digital media to support enacting and maintaining romantic relationships; partners create digital possessions frequently and often effortlessly. However, after a relationship comes to an end, individuals typically seek to disconnect from their ex-partner. This becomes difficult due to these shared digital possessions and the partners' interwoven digital presence.

This PhD research seeks to explore what happens when a romantic relationship comes to an end in a digital context, with specific regard to the digital possessions created and collected by partners during their relationship. The ways in which individuals interact with their digital possessions following a relationship break up will be investigated, as well as the effect a relationship ending can have on an individual’s digital expression of self. Additionally, the ways in which technology can improve the experience of relationship break up in a digital context will be considered.
