PB - BHR Group PY - 2011 Y1 - 2011 N2 - The application of the relatively new control system MPVC to the two longest tunnels in Japan is described. One application is new; the other is a replacement for an existing system. In addition to their large lengths, the tunnels exhibit features that significantly complicate ventilation control and, with the older tunnel, resulted in the undesirable performance of the previous control system. MPVC has eliminated the unsatisfactory behaviour whilst simultaneously yielding large energy savings. In addition to presenting results of practical operation in these two tunnels, the paper introduces an innovative proposal enabling MPVC to control two separate tunnels jointly. The control target for this case is based on the combined emissions from the two tunnels. © BHR Group 2011.
