note = "The outcome of a major commission from Scottish Screen Archive, who wanted artists to work with their material in innovative and unexpected ways. The interface concept was prototyped with a £5000 grant, followed by £25,000 for the full project. Dunlop researched, sourced and initially edited the source material, Norton re-cut the archive clips and designed the interface. Critical reflection on the material led to the addition of a wider perspective with a few external film sources, from the Prelinger Archive and from Scottish Television Film Archive. This included material on Army Psychological Operations technique, computing, nuclear energy and the role of the designer in society. The outcome, an interactive online visual and sonic mixing arena, where viewers become players and mix their own sense of ‘former futures’ using clips from the archives: on housing, new technology work environments, electrification, design, and many other topics. In the archive, the idea of the future becomes a powerful window into both the official and the unspoken nature of modernism. An element of uncertainty in the sense of control of the interface was created, echoing the sense of uncertainty of the future. The project was presented as ‘expanded cinema’, with live accompaniment from members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra performed at the Glasgow Film Theatre (17 November 2004), and the Commonwealth Film Festival in Manchester (2 May 2005). It was nominated for a BAFTA award. A text site exists alongside the main site, with commentary and information on the original source material, plus a downloadable publication reflecting on the political uses of ‘the future’ in 20th century Scotland. This commission and series of performances led to a new award from the Shetland Museum and Archive and linked online through the BBC's Scottish Island's websites.",
