Description
Elizabeth Kirk, presented two papers at the 13th IUCN Academy of Environmental Law Annual Colloquium in September 2015. The Colloquium was held at Atma Jaya Catholic University, Jakarta, Indonesia. The theme of the Colloquium was the law on forest and marine biodiversity. Elizabeth presented a paper with Dr Nengye Liu on “The European Union And The Implementation Of The Ecosystem Approach In The Arctic” in which they examined possible routes by which the EU could influence the application of the ecosystem approach in the protection of Arctic marine biodiversity. The EU’s influence within the Arctic may appear limited as it is not an Arctic coastal State. It does, however, have rights to participate in many regimes of relevance to the protection of Arctic biodiversity and in this paper Nengye and Elizabeth compared the appropriateness of pursuing different legal strategies to ensure the EU’s objectives in relation to Arctic biodiversity are met. Elizabeth's second paper addressed “Participatory Rights in Regimes Addressing Marine Biodiversity” . In this paper she explored the nature and extent of rights granted to non-State actors in international regimes addressing marine biodiversity.Period | 7 Sept 2015 → 12 Sept 2015 |
