Now in its 8th year, BEYOND is the UK’s leading conference for research and innovation. Over three days at MediaCity UK (Nov 24-26), over 100 speakers across 50+ sessions will explore the ideas shaping the future of the creative industries. BEYOND 2025 will bring together creative leaders from YouTube, V&A, Channel 4, BFI, Boomtown, Google DeepMind, Arts & Humanities Research Council, the British Council, and the UK’s leading universities, with delegates from 20+ countries.

Beyond Showcase

Design HOPES (Healthy Organisations in a Place-based Ecosystem, Scotland) is a transdisciplinary project that exploits the potential of design-led thinking and making to innovate and tackle multifaceted health delivery challenges to meet urgent net zero goals for a sustainable health and social care system. NHS Scotland has committed to become a net-zero organisation by 2040 or earlier, by reducing waste, carbon emissions, water, energy and travel. To help reach this ambitious goal, Design HOPES is creating, prototyping and testing the products, services, and systems needed to deliver change. The climate emergency is a health emergency. As our environment continues to change, so do the demands on healthcare services and infrastructure. Design HOPES is an innovative and collaborative project looking at how design can solve these complex and urgent challenges. From a portfolio of over 15 distinct projects, the two Design HOPES projects showcased at BEYOND – FLOW, and Green Ward Toolkit – focus on our digital research.

FLOW is an educational game which draws on real world data of patients attending the Emergency Department (A&E) of Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, visualising the changing patient numbers over days and weeks. Information relating to travel choices, referral routes and health issues all feed into the game, building a clear, accurate picture of unscheduled visits to A&E over time.

The Green Ward Toolkit (GWT) is designed to support both clinical and non-clinical staff by providing them with the knowledge, skills and resources to implement new sustainable practices in ward settings. The toolkit aims to empower the NHS Scotland workforce to deliver more sustainable healthcare systems by raising awareness, challenging norms, and embedding circular economy principles.
