Description
Dr Seemab Farooqi arranged Black History Month Celebrations University in partnership with the School of Medicine, the School of Life Sciences, and the School of Humanities, Social Science, and Law. We would like to thank our speakers: Professor Christian Harrison (University of Bolton), PK Senyo (University of Southampton), Dr Josephine Adekola (University of Glasgow), Dr Ada Adeghe (University of Wolverhampton), Professor Uvanney Maylor (University of Bradfordshire), Professor Shamima Haque (University of Dundee), Dr Mayra Crowe and Professor Susan Kinnear (University of Dundee). Some of the key themes that emerged from these discussions were:1. The importance of addressing intersectionality, where gender and ethnicity intersect to shape challenges.
2. Significance of merit, hard work, and perseverance in the face of racial bias, "Creating opportunities, collaborating with others, and pushing boundaries."
3. The emphasis on self-advocacy and the role of culture in shaping one’s identity and choices.
4. Institutional commitment to promote diversity and inclusion
5. Promoting positive action for ethnic minorities and underrepresented groups is vital.
6. Challenging stereotypes and labels stands out as another imperative.
7. Need for inclusive promotion criteria and re-examining the composition of the selection panels, highlighting the significance of evaluating academic excellence fairly, without favouring some individuals due to unequal backgrounds.
9. Establishment of equitable grant schemes, re-evaluating grant criteria, especially in research areas linked to racial inequalities, striving for a level playing field.
