Description
The workshops were funded by the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network, and were led by Dr. Andrea Mohan from the University of Dundee and Dr. Elena Dimova from Glasgow Caledonian University. These workshops built on findings from a project Andrea led, exploring a specialist alcohol service, the Primary Care Alcohol Nurse Outreach Service (PCANOS) based in Glasgow, in which alcohol nurses work closely with GP practices to provide tailored, person-centred care to people with alcohol problems who have challenges engaging with other community services. The findings of the project show that PCANOS has many benefits including supporting people to reduce their alcohol consumption and positively impacts on physical and mental wellbeing. A separate evaluation of PCANOS showed that it led to reduced contact with GPs, and reduced A& admissions. There were two workshops, one in Glasgow and the other in Dundee. Each workshop was attended by representatives from Alcohol Drug Partnerships for rural areas in Scotland and other key stakeholders. Each workshop focused on what is currently being offered in relation to specialist alcohol service provision across rural Scotland, and if there is scope for a service like PCANOS.
