Description
Door Drawings continues an investigation into interiors as an expanded practice examined through sculptural outputs in recent years, and on this occasion, through drawing for the i2023 DJCAD Research Expo. Door Drawings offers a visual reinterpretation of research concepts outlined in the "Dooring" conference paper presented at the Experiential Design: Rethinking Relations Between People, Objects & Environments Conference, Florida State University. In this research output a new term ‘dooring’ reconceptualises the door beyond its functional limits to acknowledge its role as a mediating device between private and public space suggesting, as Benjamin might, that the true face of the city is revealed not in its outer materiality but in ‘the sharp elevations of the city’s inner strongholds’. Door Drawings further develops these interrelationships to explore the door’s dual phenomena of outer / inner and its public / private characteristics, invoking what Aldo Van Eyck described as the ‘shape of the in-between’. This questions existing conventions of how doors are visually represented, and therefor interpreted as dimensional and functional minor elements within a larger architectural ensemble. Whilst this offers factual "data" of a door as a drawing this reveals little of its richness or nuance as objects of identity, control, passage, and transition. Door Drawings continues an inquiry into the new lexicon of “Dooring” as an expansive redefinition of the door and its relationship to the interior and the interior’s role in reading the city. The DJCAD RESEARCH EXPO, which was curated by Dr Judit Bodar, is an annual exhibition of outcomes of research projects by staff and PhD researchers from across the School of Art & Design, which I have curated working with over 50 staff and PhD researchers. I have also co-organised the related event programme including two research days with presentations, discussions.
The EXPO 2023 exhibits [including sculpture, drawing, painting, installation, video, artists books, design objects, documentaries, research posters and publications] span across Matthew Galleries South and North and draw on a range of research methods, material approaches and experimentation; expanded and interdisciplinary practices; new and emerging technologies and open source and participatory making across the breadth of art, design, and architecture.
