Dr Arun Verma, University of London delivered talk to Med Ed Nexus event "What does it mean to be invisible in universities?"
What does it mean to be invisible in universities?

Invisibility is an idea that has often been considered a superpower or a strength. The notion of being discreet, observant and stealthy have been romanticised for those heroes and villains that have this ability. However, why has such an ability to be invisible been typically attributed to women and women of colour? This narrative of invisibility permeates through society, and we see the ways in which communities, particularly women and women of colour, that experience intersecting inequalities can often go unseen, unheard and unable to participate. It is in this way that invisibility can do harm to people, their lives and their success. Whilst higher education institutions have the power to enable those that go unseen to be empowered and participate, we need to acknowledge and pay attention to where people fall between the margins and how they intersect. This talk illustrates the current landscape of the most invisible and explore the horizons for sustainable and truly inclusive transformation.
