Activity: Other activity typesPublic engagement and outreach - public lecture/debate/seminar

    Description

Drawing Lockdown II – Drawing Symposium convened by Drawing Projects UK and Drawing is Free. Alex Roberts presenting speaker from a group of 12.

The online Pecha Kucha-style Drawing Symposium focused upon asking how drawing, drawing practioners, drawing programmes and teaching drawing online developed during lockdown. Collectively sharing and unpicking how the experience of drawing together responded to the global pandemic. Noting what pedagogical methods, were used, and discovered to implement in the future. Actively digesting, discussing, and building drawing communities, partnerships. Pedagogical knowledge share.

The open call, discovery platform was associated with the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021 exhibition as a public engagement activity with Drawing Projects UK.

Alex’s problem of how to solve the challenge of keeping life drawing active, engaged, and inspired for art and design students during lockdown was made accessible. The method: creating a virtual life room, a digital experience to relate as close to the real as possible. Inclusive of the social presence it was, is propagating a drawing community. Referencing comprehensive subject disciplines, all degree levels and from national and international perspectives. Examples platforms: To Draw (De Montfort University and Drawing Projects UK); Freies Zeichnen (Mediadesign Hochschule Berlin); The Virtual Life Drawing Room (DJCAD, University of Dundee).

Concluding: the integration of virtual life drawing with F2F teaching widens the life drawing delivery to greater numbers, locations with blended means to learn and engage, sparking further inquisitive forms of social exchange. Developing to an inclusive, institutional culture that observes and learns, offering a drawing research network with scope for international partnerships.
