Plastic Lab: Empowering Students through Design Sprints

The plastics public programme at the V&A Dundee had a wide and intergenerational audience. However, students have historically been difficult for the museum to connect with and this exhibition and themes around plastic usage had the potential to resonate more deeply with this younger demographic. Over the years, “Design Sprints” have become a popular event often lasting several days and engaging large numbers of participants in a variety of projects and themes. They have also evolved into a platform to facilitate fast paced innovation, blending techniques like idea generation, prototyping and open-source design. Adopting a Design Sprint approach as part of this scoping study, would allow the V&A Dundee to trial new ways to connect more deeply with the student population while influencing designers of the future. Moreover, the design sprint would strengthen the University of Dundee's partnership with V&A Dundee and be an influential experience for young designers, exposing them to working on real civic challenges within and across the city. It would also publicly position the museum as using design and designers to improve local lives, in turn growing audience understanding of how design relates more specifically to them.
