Description

National College of Art & Design (NCAD) in Dublin were running a series of projects in support of the College’s Strategy, one of these being the Teaching and Learning Strategic Project. This encompassed several work streams looking at Learning and Teaching, Resourcing, a Digital Learning Strategy and Cross-disciplinary Learning. They wished to benchmark against other institutions that share commonality with NCAD in terms of a focus on practice-based programmes, the size of the institution and its funding model and identified DJCAD as an institution that they would like to learn from and about. They were particularly interested in speaking to staff members (and viewing relevant physical facilities, where possible) about some of the following concerns:

• the organisation of workshop spaces to maximise access for as many students as possible
• cataloguing and managing equipment to facilitate sharing, maintenance, upgrades, etc.
• systems and mechanisms for managing access for departments, disciplines and individual students
• the degree of cross-disciplinary access these arrangements offer students
• how workshop technicians and managers have experienced the arrangement.

The staff members who visited were as follows:
• Dr Renée Koch, Teaching & Learning Development Officer
• Dr Emma Creighton, Programme Director MA Interaction Design, Lecturer Product and Interaction Design
• Seán Kelleghan, Senior Technical Officer First Year Studies
