Examining the Ethical Use of AI in Teaching and Research

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

This presentation explored the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in higher education, highlighting both its transformative potential and the ethical challenges it introduces for teaching and research. It examined how AI supports personalised learning, automated feedback, virtual tutoring, scientific writing, programming, climate modelling, and drug discovery, while also raising concerns around bias, data privacy, transparency, academic integrity, overreliance, and equity. Drawing on a mixed‑methods approach that includes literature reviews, experiments, case studies, expert interviews, and large‑scale surveys, the study emphasised the need for responsible, well‑governed AI adoption. The session concluded that institutions must develop robust ethical frameworks, ensure human oversight, and promote fairness, accountability, and data protection to harness AI’s benefits while safeguarding academic standards and human rights.
