Festival of the Future 2021 - COP26 Series - Food

Description

In the lead up to COP26, the University of Dundee organised an exciting virtual seminar series that grappled with some key issues around water, food, energy and creativity from a range of expertise and perspectives.

Food

Humans have been producing food from agriculture for over 10,000 years; however, during that time the Earth experienced a relatively unique period of climatic stability. Our current concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and observed warming are pushing our climatic conditions beyond this stability and into potentially a new era. This will have severe repercussions for our food systems, means of distribution and equity in access. It will also impact the configuration of our landscapes, as we shift to new methods of production and convert less productive areas to other uses.

Drawing on these themes and more, a panel of speakers included:
Prof. Derek Stewart (Business Sector Leader – Agri-Food, James Hutton Institute) presenting on his innovative work ensuring food security of Scotland through the development of novel production systems;

Dr. Beverley Searle (Senior Lecturer, University of Dundee) who takes a human well-being perspective on the societal shifts likely to take place as well as present on the ongoing Tayside Bioregions project;

Prof. Jennie Macdiarmid (Professor in Sustainable Nutrition and Health, University of Aberdeen) presenting on the importance of understanding factors related to nutrition and international impacts of our current food system.

Dr. Alexandra Morel (Lecturer in Environmental Science, University of Dundee) chaired the session.
