GRIT Dundee - Painting Symposium

Description

G.R.I.T.’s partnering, Dundee painting symposium was kindly hosted by the University of Dundee and supported by The Glasgow School of Art + Goethe Institut Glasgow. A series of contemporary painting, discursive presentations and exchange, evidenced by the G.R.I.T. exhibition (fourteen, EU painters) curated at Drawing Projects UK, Scotland enabled participants to recognise how painted gesture and its physicality engages both the maker and the viewer. Scottish-based inclusions:

The Grit and the Grind. Gesture and the body Lys Hansen: Dr. Marianne Greated (artist, researcher, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Art Practice & Theory at Edinburgh College of Art) shared research on women painting. Noting comparisons/divergences with G.R.I.T. to Greated’s curated, Lys Hansen - ‘Live it Paint’ (2024) at Callendar House. Imparting, lineage and relationships of female Scottish painting - pinpointing, expressive figuration. Linked Q&A was co-chaired by Kirstin MacKinnon (emerging Scottish painter, based Dundee & Glasgow).

G.R.I.T. exhibiting artists in conversation encouraged audience/ artist exchange with Jenny Eden, Eglė Otto, Alex Roberts, Geraldine Swayne, Prof. Anita Taylor and Henry Ward. Insights into painters’ studio, exhibiting and practice were openly quizzed.

Concluding keynote, ‘Painting’s Correspondence and Gesture’, by Prof. Rebecca Fortnum (artist, writer, academic, Professor of Fine Art at Central St Martins, University of the Arts London) in conversation with Prof. Kelly Chorpening (artist, curator, writer, educator, Professor & Chair of Art, Art History & Design at the University of Nevada Reno, USA), and Prof. Melissa Gordon (artist, writer, teacher, organiser, Professor of Painting at Oslo Art Academy) - reviewed how a painter/painting corresponds, imbued ambiguity of the painter’s process, defining gesture as signifier of movement between state/places, relational or as response to material behaviours where the informality of a mark accumulates.

The plenary deducing painting’s maker/viewer reception as a signifier of social encounters; enhancing and increasing awareness of such relations and responses.
