Description
This exhibition forms part of a pioneering project that seeks to bring visibility to individuals often marginalised in traditional historical and archaeological narratives. Focusing on Late Antique to Early Modern Europe, the project re-examines impairment, disability, and healed trauma to shed light on the lived experiences of people with physical differences in premodern societies.
At its core is the interdisciplinary Visible Disabilities team—historians, archaeologists, archaeological scientists, forensic imaging specialists, medical practitioners, and biomedical engineers—working together to explore the biomechanics of impairment and the realities of daily life with disability in the past. By integrating scientific analysis with historical interpretation, the project challenges long-standing assumptions that placed disabled and impaired individuals at the edges of society. Instead, it reveals their resilience, presence, and active participation in the communities of their time.
