How the University responds to student welfare concerns

Description

This session explored how the University responds to student welfare concerns, using two realistic scenarios to examine current practices, challenges, and areas for improvement. Participants worked through cases involving a first‑year student experiencing severe low mood and self‑harm, and a postgraduate student showing signs of social withdrawal and possible coercive control. The workshop highlighted the complexities staff face when identifying risk, responding appropriately, and navigating confidentiality, boundaries, and available support pathways. Proposed wellbeing approaches were introduced to strengthen consistency, early intervention, and cross‑departmental communication. The group then revisited the scenarios to consider how these new approaches could improve outcomes and where further development is still needed to ensure timely, coordinated, and student‑centred support.
