Description
Druing MinD 2019 Lucy will organise and facilitate 'Smart Materials for Wellbeing' workshop. This participatory session will take the form of a workshop in which participants will explore ways that smart materials can enhance wellbeing for those living with dementia. Smart Materials ‘can exhibit a repeatable behaviour (light, sound or colour change) in response to a stimulus such as strain or temperature’1 . The workshop will use smart materials such as thermochromic pigment that changes colour when exposed to heat, sonic textiles that create sound by integrating electronics within their design, and e-textiles that incorporate electronic properties within the textile. Participants will become collaborators through a participatory, action research approach which values the ‘lived experience of people’2 . We will invite participants to work together to discuss and prototype new ways to use smart materials for living well with dementia. We will use the ideas and prototypes generated during the session for future discussion, collaboration and making. Outputs from the workshop will also be recorded and published through the conference form, the researcher’s website and a public facing document that will introduce the potential of smart materials for wellbeing within Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC).
