Description
The initial run of the introductory manifesto for the Party was launched as an artists book/mail art project. The process included an artists page in the newly reconstituted VARIANT magazine, in a special issue in honour of the late Leigh French- cultural theorist and provocateur. At the recent 'Wild research' event at the Revelator- a feral venue devoted to artists creativity and unfettered ideas, I presented a polemical performance lecture as the founder and entire (so far) membership of the reconstituted Party for Moderate Progress Within the Bounds of the Law. The original Party was initiated in Prague during the dying days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with a satirical intent. The creator was Jaroslav Hasek, author of 'The Good Soldier Svejk'. The main manifesto point was a reform of the Empire through a new system of dog licensing.Making reference to Leigh and Variant, Mandy MacIntosh on 'Clyde Film' and various sources on the black hole that is academic publishing, the talk made a series of propositions which were voted on by the audience.
these included
Grow "a kind of feral scholarship, institutional critique, plain language"
You don't have to give an account of yourself to explore and share meaning
Should we notice researchers outside the university? sad that someone
BE LESS TIMOROUS
Author-paid publication fees corrupt knowledge
rebuild the 18th century Literary and Scientific Institute network.
An initial print run of 50 hand-made manifestos were sent out to those requesting one: readers were invited to return the manifesto with a suggestion for future party policies.
An Initial Annual General Meeting will be held this year to debate these propositions.
