Description

The presentations in this panel explore two interacting perspectives on what we are measuring and how “matters” in application contexts: (i) how to ensure that the content of our measures matters to people using them; and (ii) how measures can be integrated into and facilitate change in real-life situations.
The first presentation demonstrates how a systematic review and working with stakeholders (here: young people & clinicians) in two stages of qualitative research supported the identification of content that is highly relevant for the target population when assessing alcohol-related quality of life.
The second and third presentations explore the use of measures in real-life intervention situations: Mobile technologies do not only offer opportunities for real-life assessments, but they can deliver interventions in our daily lives. Secondary analyses of data from an effectiveness study evaluating such an ecological momentary intervention investigate putative therapeutic processes of change on micro-level. This is contrasted with a systematic review investigating study design features that are associated with people’s engagement with mobile technologies for clinical purposes (here specifically ecological momentary assessment).
The final presentation takes a programmatic approach to reflect on the impact of using outcome measures in research and therapeutic practice, building especially on the use of collaborative goal setting as a tool to identify what matters when measuring change.
All presentations are concerned with broadening our understanding of how measuring outcomes can matter. Since they cover different methodologies and application contexts, the panel encourages attendees to discuss what we perceive as “valid” assessments.
