    Description

Emerging technologies has prompted several cities to invest in “smart technologies” sold by corporations who are seeking to exert influence on urban spaces and democratic governance but how do these technologies relate to daily life, values and characteristics of local neighbourhoods and communities. Citizen science has utilised emerging technologies and open hardware to empower and enabled neighbourhoods to collect data from their locality, connecting citizens to their neighbourhood environment. However, often IoT at a neighbourhood level is based around surveillance and security at the cost of people’s privacy. We’re interesting in how emerging technologies can highlight local characteristics and narratives, the idea of trust in relation to neighbourhood technology and considering dystopia and utopian scenarios. Come and join our workshop to explore the challenges and opportunities emerging technologies raises in and for neighbourhoods.
