Description
Oscillatory neural activity is a fundamental characteristic of the mammalian brain. Decades of research suggest that neural activity in specific frequency bands, as measured by electroencephalography (EEG), may play a functional role in human cognitive processes. Here I will present two lines of research which support this. First, I will show that alpha-band (8-12Hz) EEG activity plays a role in perceptual awareness in healthy participants which is dissociated from objective perceptual sensitivity. Second, I will present evidence that changes in band-specific resting-state oscillatory activity characterise Alzheimer’s disease, index dementia severity and may provide an inexpensive and non-invasive aid to diagnosis.
