Description

‘Picture Hooks Mentoring Programme & Exhibition’ 2012 / 14 Scottish National Galleries November 2012 – February 2014 Invited Mentor to Stuart Simpson and Kasia Matyjaszek, two of the five emerging Scottish illustrators selected for the Picture Hooks one to one mentoring programme. The inaugural mentoring scheme ran for a year and provided young illustrators with the opportunity to develop and complete a picture book project under the guidance and supervision of one of five Internationally renowned children’s book Illustrators. Mentors: Ross Collins, Catherine Rayne, Alison Murray Sue Heap and myself. On completion of the 2013 /14 Picture Hooks programme, four completed artworks from each Mentee along with developmental materials, such as written manuscripts, sketchbooks, story boards, book dummies etc. were exhibited in the Scottish National Gallery along side selected works of their Mentors. The exhibition and related events (conference and workshops) provided the participants and visiting public with a rare glimpse of the complex creative process involved in the composition a picture book and proved overwhelmingly popular, with the exhibition attracting over 95,000 visitors. At the opening of the Picture Hooks exhibition one of my Mentees, Stuart Simpson was selected by Orchard Books to develop his picturebook with the hope of achieving a publishing partnership. And as a result of this successful outcome, I was invited to return as Mentor for the 2014 / 16 programme.
