The occasion of the Royal Academy’s 250th birthday, the institution on which PAFA was modeled in its 1805 founding, offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of an art academy today. What relevance can an academic education have for a young artist working today? What are the roles of working from observation and study of classical form? Where does discipline based learning fit in an interdisciplinary art world? And what use is there in mastering traditional conventions when they are soon to be broken?
