A series of workshop talks from key academics at University of Dundee School of Art and Design (DJCAD) will take place in March, April and May. Presented online or in person the talks will highlight some of the work of our academics and students which relate to contemporary issues in the world of design and will offer opportunity for conversation.Problems, Processes and Prototypes: A Scottish Approach to Product Design
Most people now acknowledge that we live in a world of serious multiple crises, all of which appear to culminate in one large, interconnected turbulent crisis verging, for some, on chaos. The list of problems seems endless, from climate change and pollution to food systems and poverty. As such, the product design landscape is constantly evolving to empower designers with the essential skills and knowledge to address these pressing issues, both at the local and global levels. The presentation aims to provide a contemporary perspective on the role and impact of product design and development best practice in the UK. It begins by exploring some of the problems faced by designers in the 21st Century before discussing process models and design methods that drive forward innovation and ingenuity in creative and business practices. The presentation concludes with some background information on the MSc Product Programme at the University of Dundee, paying particular attention to the course vision and philosophy, module structure and content, examples of past student projects, and future career trajectories.
Guest Speaker
Fraser Bruce is a senior design academic at the University of Dundee with over 25 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience. He is currently the Programme Director for both the MSc Product Design and MSc Design for Business courses where he delivers specialist lectures and workshops on Design Thinking, Service Design, and New Product Development (NPD). His research interests lie in design-led innovation of products and services through nature inspired systems thinking.
