Claire Methven O’Brien was invited to speak on the human rights framework applicable to women prisoners at the event ‘Women Offenders in the Criminal Justice System Scotland’ organised by Labour Women’s Declaration Scotland, in Edinburgh on 4 March 2026, along with Pauline McNeill MSP, Rhona Hotchkiss, Director, Beira’s Place, and Linda Thompson, Women’s Support Project.

Seminar Description:

Rights and Wrongs: Women Offenders in the Criminal Justice System is a public meeting organised by Labour Women's Declaration Scotland to mark International Women's Day.

What are the issues facing women offenders in the criminal justice system? How does a system designed for men support women? How do women end up caught up in the criminal justice system?

We want to see a criminal justice system which can better support women within it and prevent more women being caught up in it. Come along to join in the discussion
