Description
The University of Dundee hosted an inter-institutional competition event between three student teams from universities in Karnataka state, India between February 2023 to June 2023. The competition was established in partnership with the Karnataka State Higher Education Council and British Council and focussed on themes in Life Sciences and Engineering. Each student team was required to propose a project which could be developed at their home institution over the course of 4 months before attending a 5-day residential visit to the University of Dundee in June 2023.The universities taking part and their projects were:
University Of Visvesvaraya College of Engineering - Experimental investigation on usage of Plastic Oil and used Cooking Oil as an alternate fuel in Diesel Engine
University of Agricultural Sciences - Design and developing a low-cost solar based sensor automatic irrigation system in remote areas of Karnataka
Gulbarga University - Assessment of Gut microbiome profile and antimicrobial resistance pattern in local tribal population in Kalaburagi region
During their project development, virtual sessions were held with academics at the University of Dundee in the School of Life Sciences and School of Science and Engineering to contribute ideas and existing research to the projects.
During the residential week in Dundee in June 2023, students were able to take part in site visits relevant to their project with the University of Agricultural Sciences visiting the James Hutton Institute and Gulbarga University visiting the Discovery Centre to visit labs and take part in an interactive game with the public engagement team. There was also representation from academics in the School of Life Sciences and School of Science and Engineering as part of the judging panel for the competition final presentations. The competition itself was won by the University of Agricultural Sciences.
