Understanding the impact of primary-secondary school transitions on young people's attainment over time: a prospective protocol for secondary analysis of the longitudinal Growing Up in Scotland dataset and linked educational administrative datasets

Activity: Talk or presentation typesOral presentation

Description

There has been a range of research that explores primary-secondary transitions. With many factors associated with positive and negative experiences. However, there is a shortage of longitudinal studies exploring the trajectories of educational attainment related to the school move and transitions experiences. While there have been some, they either use older data from the 1990’s or stop just after the move to secondary school.

Understanding these trajectories, how they differ by characteristics, and what risk/protective factors impact them, could aid in the development of effective policy to improve outcomes for Scottish young people.

The project will involve analysis of birth cohort 1 of the Growing Up in Scotland dataset, with linked educational administrative data, focusing on sweeps starting at ages 10-11 (P6) and ending at ages 17-18 (S6). The aim is to create a picture of the trajectories of young people’s transitions experiences and academic attainment, and how they interact, as they enter adulthood.

As the project is still in the early stages, an early draft of a protocol was discussed with the aim of interacting with the audience to gain valuable feedback.
