Use of AI in AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) systems: Community Consultation on Risks, Benefits and the Need for a Code of Practice

Activity: Talk or presentation typesInvited talk

Description

This session begins with a brief report on a workshop that elicited the views of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) community on the opportunities and risks posed by the integration of artificial intelligence into voice output communication aid systems. This was an explorative, qualitative study in which members of the AAC community attending a session at a UK national conference were invited to respond to structured questions posed by the research team. The use of AI for both novel language generation and rate enhancement was included alongside consideration of if a Code of Practice is needed for the use of this new technology. Potential opportunities, benefits, and risks of AI to AAC users were discussed. The session will shift to a workshop style to discuss how the results of this short study may or may not be relevant to the use of AI in general ATech (Assistive and Accessible Technology) software and systems.
