Voices of the MIssing, Poster, Phase 1: A prototype visual document to help family, friends and witnesses of enforced disappearances to understand the process of mass graves excavations, unmarked burials and body exhumations.
Voices of the Missing is a non-profit humanitarian and non-partisan organisation formed in 2020 to create a platform for diverse voices about violent conflict. Working in collaboration with the organisation I have developed a prototype poster/pamphlet. This is the first output of my research, attempting to create a visual tool that helps communicate the process and manage expectations of the family, friends and witnesses of enforced disappearances, mass graves excavations, unmarked burials, and body exhumations. Its intention is to minimise complex text, making translation simpler to help convey information where literacy may be a factor. This is a first iteration of the poster that Dr Nicolas Marquez-Grant has used to generate responses and feedback from academics, professionals, and organisations. Using this information, I will produce a working version for use and testing in the field. In March 2024 Dr Marquez-Grant will commence an exhumation to identify victims of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). A refined version of the poster will be by the excavation sites to support and help communicate the process with local schools and communities.
