Description
Presentation abstract:There is evidence that visual art making within an art therapy setting can improve the quality of parent-child relationships (Armstrong & Ross, 2020), but limited evidence from studies conducted in the general population (Menzer, 2015).
The Art at the Start research team have developed a new observational tool for the art sector, which was published in June 2023 (Art Together Toolkit). It provides a framework for recording young children’s experiences in four domains that contribute to their psychological wellbeing: Agency, Relationships, Engagement and Development. The presence of these experiences can indicate how art activity helps young children to develop their social, emotional and cognitive skills. Most importantly, these experiences are affected by the quality of the interactions a child has with their caregiver, which appear to be fostered through joint art-making (Armstrong & Ross, 2022). We seek to empower the art sector to record this evidence in their public programmes.
