DescriptionFOR the past two centuries or so, the Royal Scottish Academy has been making the careers of Scottish artists via its prestigious annual open exhibition. But when the society, since the early 20th century housed in the sphinx-topped William Henry Playfair temple on the Mound, was inaugurated as the Royal Scottish Academy in 1838, one of its founding purposes was the building of a Scottish national collection and raising the profile of Scottish art.
