Description
The "Bruin" Project carried out by the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science (LRCFS) at the University of Dundee (UoD) aims at establishing protocols to obtain systematic digital documentation of crime scenes, ultimately focusing on optimising data collection to reconstruct indoor environments of forensic interest to be viewed through immersive Virtual Reality.
The LRCFS and the National Forensic Services (NKC) at the Danish National Police started a collaboration to document fire scenes for training in the spring of 2019.
Early results unlocked the understanding of the needs of the practitioners, identifying use cases and challenges to obtain an accurate virtual reality render of the scenes of interest.
The LRCFS published a standard operating procedure (SOP) for scene capture known as the Dundee GT protocol (DOI: 10.1016/j.scijus.2023.01.001), which led to the first data collection “Udgård 2021 Raw Dataset” (DOI: 10.15132/10000174), together with a range of other digitalisation techniques. As the first Udgård data collection primarily focused on the digitalisation of fire scenes, the present dataset aims at enlarging the pool of data produced by applying an array of digitalisation tools and techniques to new scenes depicting a variety of cases and different traces.
The collaboration between the LRCFS and NKC has successfully generated data to support virtual reality representations of the following scenes and crimes:
Eduard (Yellow house) - Sexual assault/Homicide. Blood patterns, Firearms.
Grainne (Red house) - Sexual assault. Blood patterns.
Etna (Brown house) - Clandestine laboratory, blood patterns, drug.
Hae Tae (White house) - Home robbery. Fireharms, Footmarks.
The LRCFS and NKC have agreed to share the research materials produced during the crime scene exercises and that both organisations will use the outcomes for education and training.
All Udgård contributing partners can access a downloadable database with the results from Udgård, such as lidar and Matterport scans, still photographs, videos, 360 photographs, 360 videos, and other data included in this dataset.
