Biography

I completed an MA in English and Philosophy (double First Class Honours) and an MLitt in English Studies (with Distinction) at the University of Dundee.

I am currently working on my PhD in English at Dundee. My thesis is entitled: 'James Joyce: 19th Century Intermediality and the Spectacle of Memory'. The thesis examines the ways in which nineteenth-century writers William Wordsworth and Charles Dickens prefigured and influenced James Joyce’s cinematic representations of the stream of consciousness in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Ulysses (1922). Significantly, the thesis argues that Wordsworth’s visualisation of memory within the ‘spots of time’ of The Prelude (1798-1839) initiates an emphasis on memory as ‘spectacle’, emulating techniques and effects derived from public visual entertainments, namely the panorama. It presents Wordsworth's work as a foundational model for later nineteenth and early twentieth-century treatments of subjectivity, vision, and temporality, thus anticipating Dickens's and Joyce’s intermedial techniques.

Research interests

I intend to pursue an academic career in James Joyce studies, with broader interests in subjectivity, intermediality, visual culture, and media archaeology. I am also interested in post-Joycean influences, particularly the creative relationship between Joyce and Thomas Wolfe. Other research interests include: Modernism, Romanticism, Victorian literature, film studies, reader-response and literary theory, philosophy, psychology, haptic theory, and flâneur theory.
