Biography
On leaving school Alice Belcher qualified as a chartered accountant with the firm of Peat, Marwick Mitchell & Co (later KPMG). She then took a first degree in Law and Economics at the University of Keele and an MPhil in Economics at the University of Cambridge before being appointed to her first academic post as lecturer in Accountancy in the Department of Economics and Management Science at the University of Keele. She studied part-time for a PhD awarded by the University of Manchester in 1994. In 1993 she transferred to Keele's Department of Law.
She was appointed as a senior lecturer in Law at the University of Dundee in 1996 and received a Personal Chair in Law in 2000. She was Head of The Department of Law from August 2003 to January 2005. From 2006 to 2014 she was a non-executive director of NHS Education for Scotland (ministerial appointment) where she chaired the audit committee. This role gave her an insight into the regulation and education of NHS workers professionals, especially those working in Scotland. She was Programme Director of the LLM Healthcare Law and Ethics (Disctance Learning) (2012-2018). She has acted as an assessor of research proposals for the National Institute of Health Research serving from 2009 to 2010 on the SDO (Service Delivery and Organisation) studies Panel; and from Jan 2012-June2014 as a member of the HS&DR (Health Services and Delivery Research Programme Commissioning Board). She was on the board and audit committee of Cairn Housing Association: A Registered Social Landlord in Scotland based in Edinburgh for 2 years to 2015.
She is currently a non-executive director of an apprentice-training social enterprise company based in her home city of Stoke on Trent - P M Training Ltd a subsidary of Aspire Housing Asscoiation. Term of office 2014-2020. In 2020 she was appointed as a non-executive director of CILEX Regulation Ltd a body that regulates Chartered Legal Executives and their businesses in England and Wales.
She is the Law Unit of Assessement Research Lead for REF2020.

Various modules on the LLM Healthcare Law and Ethics masters programme (distance learning).
Postgraduate supervision in the fields of corporate insolvency, company law, corporate governance, and some aspects of employment law for instance discrimination. However, as of 2020 no new PhD students can be accepted.
Research

Professor Belcher's main research interests are in the areas of company law, corporate governance, insolvency law and sex discrimination law. Her work takes advantage of her multidisciplinary background, for instance a recent article on audit quality and the market for audits employs ideas drawn from economics and accountancy as well as law.
She has held ESRC grants in 1989-1992 and 1996 and a Leverhulme research fellowship in 1996-7. She was a member of the Dundee University Research Committee from 2002-2005. She held an AHRC research leave award in 2006 studying "Behavioural aspects of the development of corporate norms, laws and governance codes their content and compliance procedures". In 2007-09 she led an AHRC funded Research Network for Research on Institutional Governance.
