Research

Alistair's research interests focus on transboundary water cooperation and international law. He has published several books in recent years that examine the role of key water law instruments, including the 1997 UN Watercourses Convention and the UNECE Water Convention. In addition he has published numerous journal papers, including three recent papers that explore the procedural aspects of implementing transboundary water treaty arrangements. Alistair has led and participated in numerous international multi-discplinary research projects, wherein he has sought to explore the role and relevance of legal instruments to transboundary water cooperation. 

Teaching

Alistair's teaching responsibilities include the provision of a postgraduate module related to International Law of Freshwater Resources, and introductory lectures pertaining to Public International Law. The International Law of Freshwater Resources module examines the most salient rules and principles pertaining to transboundary (State-State) freshwater resources, including equitable and reasonable utilisation, no significant harm, notification and consultation, environmental impact assessment, joint institutional arrangements and dispute settlement mechanisms. Alistair has also conducted numerous professional training events related to international water law, including a 4-day annual international workshop which is held at the University of Dundee.
