Biography

Professor Amelia Shoemark is Asthma and Lung UK Chair of Respiratory Research at the University of Dundee, where she conducts a translational research program in chronic respiratory disease with Prof James Chalmers

Amelia began her career as an NHS clinical scientist at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. She set up and led a nationally funded laboratory for the diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) from 2007-2017, a position she still holds part time. Her translational research interests, funded by a personal post-doctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) brought new reliable and affordable tests for PCD with improved diagnostic sensitivity.  Along with international collaborators she was instrumental in identification of several of the genes now known to cause PCD. She is currently Chair of the BEAT-PCD European Respiratory Society clinical research consortium and chair of the joint ERS/ATS diagnostic guideline committee.

Professor Shoemark completed her PhD at Imperial college in 2010 investigating inflammation in the chronic respiratory condition bronchiectasis. She moved to University of Dundee in 2017 to work in the laboratories of Professor Chalmers to set up EMBARC BRIDGE, an international bronchiectasis endotyping study which has described several aspects of the pathophysiology of the disease leading to identification of targets for new therapies.  She is an active member of the EMBARC management committee.

These translational areas of respiratory research have led to>100 peer review articles and book chapters on bronchiectasis, primary ciliary dyskinesia and mucociliary clearance. She enthusiastically supervises and mentors undergraduate and post graduate scientists and clinicians.
