I am a curiosity-driven researcher working on a wide range of fluid dynamics problems, specifically those related to environmental and geophysical flows. My overarching research goal is to formulate reduced-order/minimal models of complex flow problems. My current research work focuses on:
a) Density stratified flows (specifically, oceans): Stratified shear instabilities, internal gravity waves, submarine topography's role in internal wave propagation, and ocean mixing.
b) Surface waves: Wave-current-topography interactions in coastal oceans and how these influence cross-shelf tracer transport, fluid analog of black/white holes and Hawking radiation.
c) Vortex dynamics for problems ranging from vortices in planetary atmospheres to vortices shed by fishes and flapping foils.
d) Collective behavior: fish-school patterns and their energetic benefits.
e) Inverse problems in oceanography: Mapping sea-floor topography from information available at the ocean surface.
While theoretical analysis is my key focus, my group has developed multiple, process-oriented in-house codes (e.g. vortex methods, high-order spectral, finite-difference Boussinesq NSE solver in terrain-following coordinates) for conducting numerical experiments. My work has applications in ocean mixing, wave energy harvesting, off-shore structure protection, ocean pollution mitigation, and turbulence control.
