Personal profile


Brian is a business and management academic and scholarly practitioner.  He joined the University of Dundee in 2013 after completing a 4-year Senior Foundation for Management Education/Economic and Social Research Council Fellowship at Stirling Management School, the University of Stirling.   Prior to this, he had a 23-year career with the Royal Air Force (UK Ministry of Defence Fellow (2002)) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

His research covers the broad spectrum of leadership including its history and the current state of the field.  In detail, he is very interested in: leadership as a public good (drawing on the work of John Dewey) and its relationship to sustainability and social movements; leadership in mutuals and cooperatives; and developing contemporary models of leadership, particularly in the areas of mission leadership and empowerment.  Sectors of interest include the public and thirds sectors (notably health and social care) and elite professional football.  He is the co-editor and co-author of Public and Third Sector Leadership: Experience Speaks (Emerald). 

As a Foundation for Management Education Fellow, he is very interested in rigour and notably relevance in the area of knowledge exchange and impact. He is invited regularly by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow to deliver non-clinical education in the areas of leadership, management, educational delivery and human factors.  He is also a regular lecturer (on leadership) to the Scottish Football Association (SFA) (UEFA Professional-License) – as a result of this work, he has designed the SFA Leadership Development Strategy for coach education from UEFA B License to UEFA Professional License.

He has extensive operational experience (prior to and in academia) ― at the University of Stirling, he implemented (and was founding Programme Director of) the NHS Scotland Management Training Scheme MSc programme in Leadership and Healthcare Management and the University of Stirling MBA in Finance with Foreign Trade University in Hanoi, Vietnam.  He was recruited to Dundee as Director of MBA Programmes in the Graduate School of Natural Resources, Law Policy and Management.  He was subsequently asked to look after all Management programme in the Graduate School.  He is currently Chair of the Pan-Dundee Health and Social Care Leadership Governance and Change Group.

He was a full Council Member of the Foundation for Management Education, a current Non-Executive Member of the Medical Directorate within NHS Scotland (previous Board Member of the Anaesthesia and Emergency Medicine Specialty Training Board and now the Surgical Specialty Training Board), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
