Colin Levey qualified from Dundee School of Dentistry with a BDS in 2011. He intercalated as an undergraduate dental student and gained a first class honours degree (BMSc) in Anatomy with Forensic Anthropology in 2008. He passed the membership examinations (MFDS) at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow whilst completing foundation training posts (VT and DF2) in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Colin worked in the restorative, orthodontic and paediatric departments at Glasgow Dental Hospital before returning to Dundee to take up his current post as Clinical Lecturer in Restorative Dentistry in 2014.
In addition to teaching and research commitments, Colin is undertaking higher specialist training in Restorative Dentistry. In this capacity, he is the trainee representative for the British Dental Association on the BMA Scottish Junior Doctors Committee.
Colin completed his PhD entitled “Overcoming Avoidable Research Waste in Carious Lesion Management Research” in 2020 under the supervision of Professor David Ricketts and Professor Jan Clarkson. The focus of his thesis was in developing a Core Outcome Set (COS) for caries management clinical trials.
Working with colleagues in Dundee and Berlin, he is led consensus exercise involving patients and professionals to agree which outcomes should be routinely measured in such trials. This COS has informed the design of two large NIHR-funded clinical trials co-ordinated by the trials team in Dundee: SCRiPT (Selective Caries Removal in Permanent Teeth) and PIP (Pulpotomy for Irreversible Pulpitis). Colin has presented work related to this COS at two IADR congresses as well as ORCA 2018.
Colin is interested in reducing avoidable research waste by improving the conduct and reporting of clinical oral health research. In particular, at the interface between primary and secondary research.
Clinical supervisor of BDS students on the Conservation and Integrated Oral Care (IOC) departments at Dundee Dental Hospital and School.
Co-lead of the dental local anaesthesia course delivered to early clinical students. This teaching involves the use of Theil embalmed cadavers which retain their flexibility, allowing students to practise these techniques before providing them as part of clinical care within the hospital. This has eliminated the practising of such techniques on peers at Dundee Dental School. Colin has contributed to poster presentations about this work at ADEE and IADR congresses.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
