Personal profile

Research

My research interests focus on colorectal disease. I have studied primary care referral pathways with a view to early detection of CRC. Our group pioneered the measurement of faecal haemoglobin in primary care (using FIT) in patients presenting with new symptoms. We demonstrated that this is an important adjunct to clinical acumen in determining who needs colonoscopy (and the urgency). This work has informed BSG/ACPGBI national guidelines.

My main clinical interest is inflammatory bowel disease. I have contributed to a number of clinical and genetic studies. I have research collaborations with academic colleagues in Edinburgh (G-T Ho) and Glasgow (K Gerasimidis).

Teaching

I contribute to undergraduate gastroenterology teaching in year 1 Medicine, supervise SSC students in years 1,3,4,5, teach on the Masters of Public Health course including supervision of an MPH thesis.
