Biography

I am a Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Dundee where my primary research interest is the study of how accounting influences, and is influenced by, the everyday lives of individuals within contemporary society. This formed the basis of my PhD thesis, obtained from Heriot-Watt University, where I investigated the transformative role that accounting played within the British music industries throughout the historically important period of the 1960s, as well as how modern music producers utilise accounting information when organising and managing creative activities music production projects.

As part of my interest in the relationship between accounting and everyday life, I am also interested in the role of accounting and accountability in various areas of participatory culture, with a particular interest in the participatory budgeting. I am currently working on a project with colleagues at the University of Dundee focused on participatory budgeting within the Scottish context.

Following my PhD, I remain interested in accounting history and several of my ongoing projects are in this area of research. I am a member of the executive committee of the British Accounting and Finance Association’s Accounting History Special Interest Group.

Prior to becoming an academic, I worked in professional accountancy practice and I am member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. I have recently co-edited the latest edition of Financial Accounting: An Introduction as well as the accompanying Financial and Management Accounting: An introduction with Professor Pauline Weetman, Professor Emerita at the University of Edinburgh.
