Personal profile

Biography

I trained in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine in North-West London, during which time I completed a PhD in the immunology of tuberculosis with Profs Ajit Lalvani and Onn Min Kon at St. Mary's Hospital. I started working as a consultant physician in Respiratory and Acute Internal Medicine at NHS Tayside in 2017.

My main clinical interests incorporate complex lung infections, particularly tuberculosis, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, and non-tuberculous mycobacteria. I also work in medical high dependency, and have interests in the delivery of care in both chronic and acute respiratory infections, including Influenza, and more recently COVID-19. As part of this, I am the Lead for Winter Planning at NHS Tayside.

I am Chair of the Pulmonary Infection Special Advisory Group in the British Thoracic Society, and was a co-opted member of the UK New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Teaching

I teach 1st year MB ChB Respiratory SIP Modules on Tuberculosis and Respiratory Infections, and also on Respiratory Emergencies to the 5th Year MB ChB students during their Acute Care Block.

Research

In 2019 I was awarded a Chief Scientist's Office NRS Career Fellowship to study fungal lung infections, and am a Principal Investigator on the MRC-funded Fungal Resistance Evolution and Acquisition in chronic Lung disease (FREAL) study, with Dr. Anand Shah at Imperial College London, and Prof. James Chalmers at the University of Dundee.

During the ongoing pandemic, I have been awarded a CSO grant as Chief Investigator for the FOcused LongitudinaL Observational Study to Improve KnoWledge of COVID-19 (FOLLOW-COVID). I am a local PI on the UK wide PHOSP-COVID trial which will also look at outcomes following COVID-19 Infection. I am also a co-investigator on the PREDICT-COVID and STOP-COVID studies, and a local PI on the ATOMIC2 trial of Azithromycin in early disease.
