Personal profile

Biography

Helena Gregory is an artist, designer and lecturer in Graphic Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee.

Helena studied Graphic Design at Manchester School of Art and holds an MA in Graphic Design and Art Direction. In 2017 Helena founded the design studio Chaosmos with Joe Haigh.

Her work explores ideas about the visual surface, typography and the image. Key areas of current interest are exploring the use of photography as material and the function of a photograph as both image and object. These ideas are investigated through photography and other image-making processes such as engraving to produce outcomes that connect the notion of the image as a surface and the photograph as an object. These ideas have been explored in the exhibitions Book – Space with Clinton Cahill, Joe Gilmore and Joe Haigh (2020), Paperwork with Joe Haigh (2017); the publication Diminutive Forms with Joe Haigh (2018); and in her residency at FLACC, Genk, Belgium (2021–22).

Helena also has a strong interest in publication design and artists books. In these projects, particular emphasis is placed on the manipulation of typography and materials in relation to language. Projects experimenting with these ideas include Seven Short Circular Walks from the Cardigan Community Centre and The Book of Book Ideas with Pamela Crowe and Joe Haigh (2022); Black Gold: trustworthiness in artistic research with Amanda Ravetz and The Dead with Joe Haigh (2017).
