Biography
Jacques Hartmann is Reader in Law and Director of the LLM in International Law & Security. He has extensive experience teaching and practicing international and human rights law. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University, where he also worked as Research Associate at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. He has taught international and human rights law in various capacities at universities in the UK, including Durham, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as overseas, and is currently External Lecturer at La Sabana University, Colombia. Prior to joining Dundee University, Jacques worked as Legal Officer at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representing Denmark at diplomatic conferences and before the International Court of Justice. He has experience collaborating with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Research
Jacques’ research interests focus on general issues of public international law, particularly relating to security, transnational crime and human rights. His published works address questions of international peace and security, criminal cooperation, extradition, immunity and jurisdiction. Between 2003 and 2016, he has been co-compiler of the section on state practice in the British Yearbook of International Law published by Oxford University Press. Jacques also regularly contributes to the International Committee of the Red Cross Project on Customary International Humanitarian Law.
