Biography

Joanna Duff was born in Edinburgh and showed an early interest in languages and literacy. In 2010, she began her undergraduate in French Translation and Applied Linguistics at Heriot Watt University during which she spent a year teaching English in a French secondary school. After discovering a passion for teaching and upon completion of her degree, Joanna undertook the PGDE Primary course at the University of Dundee. After a successful teaching career in the North-East of Scotland, Joanna joined the University of Dundee as a Lecturer in September 2024. Joanna teaches across the ITE programmes as Dundee and is the module lead for the MA4 Thesis Module.

Joanna is keen to promote discourse around Learning for Sustainability, Curriculum Theory and the role of literacy and language in the classroom.

Her research interests include curriculum and Learning for Sustainability, was a focus for her Masters' dissertation in 2018. Currently, Joanna is working on her Doctorate of Education where she is undertaking a theoretical study of curriculum and the effect empty signifiers, such as, ‘excellence’ have on curriculum making.

I am currently working with Professor J Paraskeva and Dr. P Adams on my thesis. My current working title is ‘Curriculum for Excellence: Whose ‘Excellence’ is it anyway?’.

Teaching

Current teaching responsibilities include:

  • Module Lead for Thesis (4th year, MA Primary Education)
  • Teaching on the new Learning and Teaching for Sustainability module (MA2).
  • Teaching Middle/Upper Languages (MA2).
  • Teaching Language and Literacy (PGDE).
  • Teaching Social Studies (PGDE).
  • Teaching Learning for Sustainability elective (PGDE).
  • Mentoring tutor groups across ITE.
  • Supporting students across ITE as an AoS.
