Biography

Kevin is an experienced manager and leader of change in the land use sector. As Curator of the University of Dundee Botanic Garden and Grounds he helps to lead the Living Lab that is exploring education for sustainability and Nature-based Solutions, while his own research explores how spaces become more sustainable places through the imbued emotion of people engaging with their environment.

Kevin contributes to a number of academic programmes from life sciences, geography, environmental sciences, to art, design and curatorial practices. He is visiting lecturer in urban agriculture to the University of Stavanger, Norway and sits on the LANTRA Horticulture Skills Group to support stanards in horticultural training in Further and Higher Education in Scotland.

Research

Kevin is one of the co-founders of the University of Dundee Living Lab. A co-creative hub, that integrates research and innovation to bring focus to topics of sustainability. In 2024 he helped found and publish the 'Living Lab Journal', a diamond open access journal dedicated to giving practioners a platofrm to share their work and further their objectives in the fields of sustainability, ecological leadership, outdoor learning, and environmental arts. His recent research focusses on three aligned scales of impact. 1) The role of curation and evolving roles of botanic gardens, emphasising their potential as platforms for environmental and social transition in urban settings. 2)  Working at the Bioregional 'catchment' Scale in Tayside, through facilitating learning journeys, lectures, writing and research. Advancing sustainable, place-based approaches to living and working that align with the ecological and cultural characteristics of the Tay catchment as a specific region. It involves reconnecting people with their local landscapes, economies, and communities by promoting regenerative practices in areas such as food production, land management, and urban planning. 3) The Urban ReLeaf project is a four-year, Horizon Europe-UKRI funded initiative aimed at empowering citizens to implement Nature-based Solutions to urban challenges such as air pollution, and climate change. Launched in January 2023, it involves collaboration between 15 academic and private sector partners, as well as six European cities: Athens, Cascais, Dundee, Mannheim, Riga, and Utrecht.
