Biography

Lars Waldorf joined Dundee Law School as a Reader in September 2017. Before that he was a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Applied Human Rights (University of York) and a Lecturer at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies (University of London). 

In his first career, he practiced as a civil rights and poverty lawyer in the US for nine years, including five years as a senior trial attorney with the Justice Department (in the Clinton years!). After an interlude as a journalist reporting on genocide trials at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, he ran Human Rights Watch’s field office in Rwanda in 2002 and 2003. In 2004-5, he was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard Law School’s Human Rights Program and taught in the BA Program at The New School. 

Lars earned a BA from Harvard College, a JD from Harvard Law School, and a PhD from the Irish Centre for Human Rights (National University of Ireland-Galway).

Research

Lars has authored numerous publications on transitional justice, legal empowerment, and Rwanda, including three co-edited books: Remaking Rwanda: State Building and Human Rights after Mass Violence (with Scott Straus); Localizing Transitional Justice: Interventions and Priorities after Mass Violence (with Rosalind Shaw) and Disarming the Past: Transitional Justice and Ex-Combatants (with Ana Patel and Pablo de Greiff). 

He is Principal Investigator for an AHRC-ESRC Global Challenges Research Fund (PaCCS) project that looks at how combining mixed-abled dance and rights-awareness may empower people with conflict-related disabilities in Sri Lanka. Undergraduate: English Criminal Law and Evidence; Justice, Law and Human Rights (with Kirsteen Shields) 

Postgraduate: International Criminal Justice (with Sophie Rigney) 

PhD Supervision: Lars is happy to supervise PhDs in the area of transitional justice, peacebuilding, international criminal law, legal empowerment/access to justice, Responsibility to Protect, and international human rights.

Activities 

Lars is an Associate Editor at The International Journal of Human Rights and on the editorial board of the Journal of Human Rights Practice. He has worked as a consultant for several organizations, including the International Center for Transitional Justice, the Committee to Protect Journalists, and the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers. 

He has been an external examiner for postgraduate human rights programs at the Edinburgh Law School and Kingston University.
