Personal profile

Teaching

Before becoming a medical educator I was a social worker and family therapist, an educational policy writer and extensively involved in developing National Occupational Standards for NVQs/SVQs and pathways between vocational and academic/ professional qualifications. I've worked in health care education since 2006 at The Royal Veterinary College, Imperial and University of Bedfordshire and founded and run my own consultancy company Learn2 associates from 2000-5.
I am part of the faculty for the Centre for Medical Education where I have designed, lead and delivered online and face-to- face modues for professionalism, medical education research, curriculum, learning and teaching and leadership. I was dissertation lead for eight years and developed a scholarship route to our Masters for those wanting to take a self-directed rather than research approach to the qualification.

My research interests include creative pedagogy, effective online teaching, communication, formative assessment, emotional intelligence, emotional labour and faculty development. I am particularly interested in addressing inbalances between WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised Rich &  Democratic and Non-Weird Countires. I have supervised PhD students from Sri Lanka, Malawi and Saudi Arabia.
I am a qualitative researcher and have specialised in utilising emergent design and appreciative inquiry.
